An analytical method for calculation of the critical energy of thermally insulated composite superconductors is presented. It takes into account temperature dependent conductor properties and the finite duration and finite length of heat disturbances. The method, which includes no adjustable parameters, yields critical energies which are in fair agreement with experimental results and numerical analysis.
